...is the chairman of Tennants of Leyburn, one of the top three regional auction houses in Great Britain. It remains a family business. Two of Rodney’s daughters Alison and Jane are now involved in the business, the fourth generation of Tennants to be so.
What do you feel makes mid-Wensleydale such a special place to visit?
The dale is wide and its scenery soft. It doesn't have the deep sides of many others. That makes it both special and beautiful. It’s been home to me all of my life. I worked in London for three years but Middleham was always in my thoughts.
Where is your favourite place around here?
For pure nostalgia it has to be the banks of the River Cover from the stepping stones below East Witton to Coverham Abbey. I learned to swim there.
What is the best event to take place in the Leyburn area?
Wensleydale Show. I sometimes miss it because we are away but if we are at home it is a must. I have a photograph taken at the show of me as a boy in shorts! Wouldn't do that today with my legs.
What single piece of information should people have when they visit here?
Get to know a local who really knows the area and is prepared to give you their knowledge. It’ll probably mean a trip to the local pub…he’ll be the one at the end of the bar and it might cost you a couple of pints but he’ll tell you stuff that will make your holiday.
What’s the best kept secret in the area?
The beauty and charm of our local churches - the brass at Wensley, the stained glass at East Witton and Middleham and the churchyard of the cathedral of the dale, Aysgarth.
