What do you feel makes mid-Wensleydale such a special place ?
The countryside is a big plus but we are also served by some excellent restaurants and tea rooms. The Blue Lion in East Witton and the Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton are favourites of mine. Our guests have offered glowing reports of Penleys in Leyburn and the Jervaulx and Serendipity tearooms are a must.
Where is your favourite place around here?
Black Dub. It’s a bend in the River Cover accessible along footpaths from both East Witton and Middleham. It is so tranquil, a place to watch the world go by and have a picnic on hot summer days.
What is the best event to take place in the Leyburn area?
The Food and Drink Festival in Leyburn over the May Bank Holiday weekend. It showcases the diverse range of food produced in Yorkshire, from lamb to ostrich and bison.
What single piece of information should people have when they visit here?
Don’t go down a single track road unless you are confident in your abilities to reverse!
What’s the best kept secret in the area?
Hulla Bridge, just below the hall on the bridleway to Middleham. There’s been a bridge there since Cisterian monks carried firewood to Middleham Castle. It’s an idyllic spot, rich in history and wildlife.
