Wensleydale, in particularly the town of Middleham is renowned for its history and famous race horses. The horses are a great sight as they make their way to the gallops on the High Moor every morning.
The horses are the stars of the day at Middleham & District Trainers Open Day. The 21st Good Friday event takes place on 18th April 2014. Visitors get a rare opportunity to see behind the stable door and see the preparation that goes in to a race day. In addition, Pony Club and jockeys meet to compete in unfamiliar events, such as show jumping. There is also a fun run and Trainers form a celebrity question time panel.
There are plenty of pubs and cafes for lunch in Middleham and surrounding villages, many offering accommodation as well. For the latest news about the 2014 Open Day Click Here
Middleham Racing Tours offer a range of packages letting you enjoy our racing heritage. There is a chance to spend a morning on the famous gallops, and to meet the trainers, jockeys and the horses themselves. We are ideally situated so you can stay over and follow the horses as they race at one of Yorkshire's nine racecourses. To find out more visit the Racing Tours website.
Whether you are a complete beginner or experienced rider, equestrian centres in Wensleydale and Swaledale offer plenty of opportunities to learn to ride and enjoy the dales on horseback. From short lessons to half and full day excursions to week long trekking holidays there is plenty of choice. There are accommodation providers who can stable horses or have arrangements with local families who can provide overnight facilities.
