Director of the Tour De France comes to Leyburn!
It was not quite the weather the 200 riders of the Tour De France will be expecting in July 2014, but the snow covered hills of Wensleydale and Swaledale were just what Christian Prudhomme, the director of the Tour was treated to duting a visit in January 2013. Along with his family and Gary Verity, Chief Executive of Welcome to Yorkshire he enjoyed some of the scenic views of the Yorkshire Dales that the riders and spectators of the first leg of the tour will take in.
The visited included a stop at Aysgarth Falls and a hearty lunch at the Dales Bike Centre in Fremington before the Tour De France party headed to Leyburn where they met Richard Sanderson & Simon Eastwood, Chairman and Secretary of Leyburn and Mid Wensleydale Business Association.
Reflecting on the meeting Richard said “It was a privilege to meet, Mr Prudhomme and his family during their visit to a wintery Wensleydale.” he added “We are very fortunate to be a part of the route and, together with Welcome to Yorkshire, we are supporting businesses to make the most of this unique opportunity.
Bringing the Tour to the region will be a welcome boost for Yorkshire’s economy. “One of the reasons we bid for the Tour was to significantly raise the profile of Yorkshire on the international stage” said Gary “We are convinced the Tour’s visit will have a huge economic impact. Two million people came out to see the Olympic torch when it passed through Yorkshire and we’re expecting in the region of three million to line the route of the Tour stages.”
After a visit to one of Leyburn’s independent retailers, Serendipity, the party headed back to Carlton to a warm and welcoming farmhouse and some more great Yorkshire hospitality.
